DISCOVERING LEGENDS, MYTHS, AND SYMBOLS...
Everyday we encounter "things" that were once part fantasy. Mythology, fantasy, and legends throughout time have tried to explain things they did not understand. The myths of every civilization have described weapons, flying machines, chariots that operated without horses and today those fantasies have become our inventions of weapons, airplanes and cars. We've seen many famous "legends" as characters in movies, books and in our recent research on Myths.
In this activity the word "Thing" is defined in its broadest category,
"Any Possible Object of Thought". So, be creative in your thoughts about each!
We are going to explore a variety of myths, monsters and symbols through investigation on the internet and any books you may find in class or the library. We've learned some myths from the textbook but lets discover what other cultures, myths, folklore and legends are out there that go beyond what we have learned in class.
Lets investigate some of these "Things"
and figure out where they came from...
We are going to record our investigations and list where these "things" came from, who or what civilization created the myth, legend, symbol or god, an approximate time frame the myth was formed and what was this "thing" used for. Be detailed in your explanations about each. I will expect at least one paragraph on each "thing" after you've completed your research. Refer to the evaluation page to make sure you have completed the assignment correctly. The task and process tabs will help you to better understand the process of this assignment.
The subjects we will be exploring are Thor, The Flying Dutchman, The Kraken, Ra, and Amulets.
The reference page will provide you with links to help you discover more information on each of the above "things".
Lets get started by going to the task page to view images and get additional assignment details, then move to the process page to start working and get a better idea of how to complete assignment, use the reference page to conduct your research and find other source suggestions to aid in your research. Be sure to review the rubric to ensure you have completed your assignment requirements and for a conclusion of what is expected to be accomplished. Feel free to leave questions and comments for me on the thoughts and questions tab, your fellow students will be able to read and may have suggestions as well... Good Luck!
